Representatives from these programs visit
senior centers, retirement homes and retirement communities
(accompanied by homeless pets) to help spread the word about
their adoption services. Some programs even provide free veterinary
services, cover the cost of neutering and supply transportation
and food for those who can't afford the costs of owning a
pet.
Pet
Partners
A national registry of pets and volunteers who visit
lonely, ill and disabled people. Pet Partners is offered by
the Delta Society,
an organization that promotes beneficial relationships between
animals and people Pet partners include dogs, cats, birds
and other pets. They accompany owners on visits to nursing
homes, hospitals, schools, prisons, treatment centers and

PAWS/LA
Located in the Los Angeles area (There is also a program
in San Francisco.). Helps
people with AIDS/ARC related disabilities keep their pets.
Provides domestic pet care including walking, grooming, feeding
and transportation to veterinary appointments. Their devoted
volunteers find foster homes for pets when people with AIDS/ARC
are hospitalized or unable to care for their pets. In addition,
they provide pet food, supplies and assistance with acute
care in emergency situations. They will also find permanent
homes for pets, arranged in consultation with the owner who
is given the opportunity to become acquainted with their pet's
prospective new family.
