In some areas horse lovers can obtain free,
already-trained horses from summer camps in exchange for feeding
and giving them a home for the nine months of the year when
they aren't being used by the camp. Many horse owners don't
have time to ride them or care for them and will "share" them
with someone who does. By keeping a lookout in the local papers,
or even placing your own ad and asking neighborhood horse
owners "to put the word out," there is a good chance that
similar opportunities will present themselves.
The
Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
This division of the federal government sponsors an "Adopt-A-Horse
or Burro Program." The BLM is the agency responsible for managing
the nation's herds of wild horses and burros. When the herds
become too large for the range to support, some of the animals
are rounded up and offered for adoption. More than 100,000
of them have been taken in by people.
