With over 800,000 members nationwide, this group is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country. Their overall goal is to prevent cruelty to animals, accomplished through public education, legislative lobbying and taking legal action against irresponsible pet owners, caretakers and breeders. Moreover, they monitor zoos and animal exhibits for any sign of inhumane treatment and strive to protect endangered species and marine mammals. With eight regional groups in the U.S., this group is an ideal source for learning more about responsible pet care, how to reduce animal overpopulation and eliminate animal suffering.

This group is quite well known for working closely with other national and international animal welfare agencies in promoting public education and support concerning the prevention of cruelty to animals, saving endangered species and reducing animal suffering.

American Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Founded in 1866, the ASPCA is one of the nation's oldest animal welfare agencies. In protecting and promoting animal rights, they manage hundreds of animal adoption shelters throughout the U.S., offer low cost spay and neutering services, work through legal channels to implement new animal protection laws and provide various public information seminars on the prevention of cruelty to animals as well as the importance of compassionate and humane animal treatment.

Originators of the popular bumper sticker, "We Speak For Those Who Can't," the Fund For Animals works to protect both wild and domestic animals from cruelty, suffering and endangerment. Their concerns range from saving dolphins exploited by tuna fishermen to seeking more humane treatment of greyhound racing dogs and eliminating medical experiments performed on animals. They often take legal action to protect to publicize inhumane animal treatment.

Dedicated to advancing humane animal treatment, this agency produces documentaries, publishes informative newsletters and campaigns for animal rights legislation. Concerned with both wild and domestic animals, they educate the public about such topics as the prevention of pet overpopulation, the unethical use of leg-hold traps, the killing of marine mammals and the decline of endangered species. They also actively demonstrate in protest against inhumane animal treatment institutions. Membership is $15.00 annually. Members receive a quarterly magazine.

National Humane Education Society (NHES)

This well-known agency is devoted to fighting animal cruelty and protecting wildlife. Unlike some groups, the National Humane Education Society operates animal care facilities that are dedicated to the permanent care of lost, sick or abandoned animals. They enforce animal rights laws already in place and seek new animal protection laws. Additionally, they promote sterilization of pets to prevent overpopulation, conduct seminars and present films to better educate the public about animal welfare.

As the second oldest animal welfare agency in the nation, founded in 1868, this group operates three large animal hospitals and eight animal shelters throughout the state. They have a legislative department that monitors animal protection bills and lobbies for animal rights. The organization employs 13 uniformed animal control officers who are responsible for investigating animal cruelty allegations and inspecting animal exhibits and institutions. They also work to inform the public about animal welfare through various educational programs.
