There are special airfare deals that make
it easier and sometimes cheaper to travel to individual countries
and multi-country regions. Most of the passes are packets
of coupons, and there are usually minimum (about three) and
maximum limits on the number of coupons you can buy. The airlines
sometimes are reluctant to work with travelers on putting
together these special deals. Often the reservation clerks
don't even know about them.
Domestic programs are sometimes limited to certain groups
such as students or seniors. Sometimes they are sold as part
of promotions between the airlines and travel clubs. For international
passes, these programs are usually open to persons residing
outside the country or countries within which the flights
are being taken.
United States airlines offer similar programs for domestic
United States flights to persons living abroad even if those
persons are United States citizens. Some United States residents,
as a result, have enrolled in these programs while out of
the country, used a foreign address and then used the passes,
tickets, or coupons in the United States.
To determine your best cost options, always compare the price
of an air pass, visitor ticket, or visitor discount fare with
whatever alternatives are available. Fare prices to inquire
about might include: a single long-haul ticket that includes
all the stops you want to make, side trips by surface transportation
(rental car or train), or airline side trips purchased individually.
