| Corporations,
nonprofits, community groups and government organizations need
trainers for various purposes. Perhaps you are a computer whiz
who can pass on your knowledge of the web in private or group
Internet training sessions. Perhaps you know a lot about media
relations and want to train corporate officers to be more savvy
in on-camera and print interviews. Perhaps you want to train
nonprofit organizations to do better grassroots organizing.
Whatever your area of specialty is, you can learn how to teach
what you know and make a lot of money doing it. If you can find
a place to hold your trainings at no cost, often the organization
you are conducting the training for will provide that location.
You can start this business without laying out much cash at
all. Also, see the related listing about Diversity Trainers
under Consulting Careers.
Tutor
With bigger classes and less
funding for teachers, often students with special needs fall
through the cracks or simply can't get enough help during
the day at school. If you have an affinity for working one-on-one
with students and have good knowledge in one or more subject
areas, you can hire yourself out as a tutor in those areas.
While you can certainly travel to a central location, such
as a library or school, or to the home of the students you
tutor, this is a business you could easily run out of your
home, which would also eliminate any travel time (for which
you would not be paid!). Make sure you have a quiet place
where you can work with the student without interruptions.
If you work with several students a week, this business can
provide a nice income.
Performing Arts Teacher
Similar to tutors but much more specialized, performing
arts teachers have worked out of their homes for years. If
you were an instrumental or vocal teacher, as long as you
teach a portable instrument, your only outlay of cash would
be for your own instrument, which you would use for demonstrations.
And if you have the talent and skill to teach an instrument
or other performing art, it is likely that you already have
the instrument or other equipment in your home. Like tutoring,
this requires several clients to be lucrative, and demands
a high level of patience and rapport with your students.
Arts and Crafts Instructor
From knitting to jewelry making to stained glass,
there are many arts and crafts that can be taught out of your
home or at a central location. This kind of business could
easily be combined with a Craftsperson business as described above. Often local adult education or enrichment
services are looking for instructors for classes, and it is
normal for students to buy their own materials.
Etiquette Consultant
Should the salad fork sit to the left or the right
of the dinner fork? How long can I wait to write a thank-you
note after I receive a gift? These are just some of the questions
an etiquette consultant can answer for his or her clients.
This can be a lucrative business, particularly if you offer
small classes for the younger set. Many parents do not have
time to teach extensive etiquette lessons to their children,
but want to make sure their children are polite and behave
properly in polite society. Private schools are good places
to market your services if you choose this as a business.
Wedding/Party Planner
The wedding industry is booming nationally, and there
is no reason why you canšt take advantage of that. Anxious
brides always want someone to provide them with advice, contacts
and solutions for major and minor wedding crises. If you have
strong organizational skills and good contacts in the hospitality
industry, this might be a business option. Although this business
can be started with almost no start-up funds, it is important
to develop a good database before you start, including photographers,
caterers and florists. Simply send potential referrals a letter
telling them you are beginning your business and would like
to receive their materials so you can share them with clients.
In no time, youšll have an excellent collection of resources
to employ when your clients ask you for help.
