Regional and National Organizatons

FEEA Fund Scholarships

Competition for Federal Employee Education and Assistance (FEEA) Fund scholarships is annual, with applications available from January through May. Awards, based on merit, are made over the summer in time for the fall term. All dependent student applicants must be attending school full time; federal employees may be enrolled on a part-time basis. FEEA scholarships can range from $300 to $1,500 per school year. Minimum requirements are at least three years of federal service and a 3.0 grade point average on the 4.0 scale.

National Honor Society

Each school National Honor Society chapter nominates two seniors to receive this scholarship. Nominees must be able to demonstrate on their applications that they possess outstanding character, scholarship, service and leadership. The Society selects from among these nominees and makes 250 one-time awards of $1,000.

Presidential Scholarships

Up to 141 students are selected from students who are high scorers on the ACT and SAT. A four-day visit to Washington, DC, and a $1,000 check from a private foundation is presented to each student. http://www.ed.gov/offices/OIAA/Recognition/scholars.html

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program

This is a federally funded program administered by the states. Each state establishes its own criteria and selection; however, the majority are a awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in high school and show promise of continued academic achievement in college. The awards are not based on need and can be used at any school. Approximately 5,300 of these scholarships were awarded for the 1992-93 school year, which is the most recent year for which there is data available. These $1,500 scholarships are renewable for up to the first four years of study at the institution of higher education of the recipientıs choice. Harry S. Truman Scholarships

This is also a federally funded program for students already in college. Seventy-five to 80 $30,000 awards are made each year for a combination of senior and graduate work. Intel Science Talent Search

This is a national program with awards given to high school seniors for outstanding research projects in science, mathematics, engineering or technology judged at science fairs around the country. In each of six regional competitions, one individual winner is awarded $3000, and the regional team winner divides a $3000 scholarship. All regional runners-ups receive $1000 scholarships. At the national competition in December, the top individual winner is presented an additional $100,000 scholarship, and the national team winner divides an additional award in that same amount (the national individual winner and national team winner will each take home a total of $103,000 in scholarships, with the team members splitting their award money). Five individual and five team runners-up on the national level are each awarded $20,000 scholarships (with teams dividing their awards). 4H Awards Program and Boy Scouts of America

Students can also participate in local and regional scholarship programs through 4H Clubs (http://www.fourhcouncil.edu) or the Boy Scout organization at http://www.bsa.scouting.org.

National Basketball Association Scholarships

The NBA offers $50,000 in scholarships to high school seniors based on extra curricular activities, test scores, teacher recommendations, and essay competition, without regard to athletic ability.

The Siemens Award for Advanced Placement

Each year the Siemens Foundation recognizes outstanding AP students with the highest cumulative scores on the greatest number of AP exams in the fields of Biology; Calculus BC; Chemistry; Computer Science AB; Environmental Science; Physics C Electricity and Magnetism; Physics C Mechanics; and Statistics. Twenty-four regional winners receive $3,000 awards, and the two national winners each receive an additional $5,000 award. Essay Writing and Scholarship Contests

There are many national contests for scholarships, usually offering small money prizes. The National Association of Secondary School Principals in Reston, Virginia, publishes a free booklet (downloadable from their website at www.nassp.org) of more than 60 competitions that they endorse as reputable and sound. For example, The Voice of Democracy Scholarship program sponsored by the VFW National Headquarters makes national and local awards from $1,000 to $25,000 based on delivery of three to five minute original scripts. Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) awards between $5,000 and $10,000 to student composers who enter their awards competition by submitting original musical compositions.
