If you are interested in pursuing a
career in just about any area of medicine, whether it be as
a doctor, nurse, chiropractor, therapist, veterinarian or
dentist, there is a scholarship or loan program available
to you. Medical school is expensive‹very expensive‹so looking
for a way to help pay for a portion of your education is definitely
worthwhile.
The federal government spends approximately
$1.5 billion annually for health professionals¹ training.
Some of the money is earmarked for students, and the rest
goes to the schools to help offset the high cost of meeting
the payroll of the medical training staff. Indirectly, this
money does affect the students‹it holds down tuition costs,
which would be even higher if the school had to foot the entire
payroll bill alone.
Students who apply for these scholarships
should show a willingness to practice their professions in
what is known as "shortage areas." These are predetermined
areas within a specific field of medicine where the quality
and availability of care is below the national average. The
Department of Health and Human Services favors graduates who
have shown a willingness to serve the communities in these
"shortage" areas.
Some of the federal, individual and
military medical and nursing programs that offer assistance
include:
