Each
year 32 American students with advanced undergraduate academic
standing are selected as Rhodes Scholars to attend the University
of Oxford in England. Requirements are very stringent, and candidates
are evaluated on merit, without regard to race or gender. Selection
is based on four criteria: scholarship, character, leadership,
and physical vigor. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, unmarried,
and between the ages of 18 and 23. Recipients of Rhodes Scholarships
are entitled to a minimum of two years' study at the University.
The Rhodes Scholarship is traditionally a very prestigious and
coveted award.
