| The
armed forces offer some of the most extraordinary savings available
in earning a full college degree. In fact, in their effort to
educate your nation's uniformed personnel, they will actually
pay you to go to college. Funds for a college education can
be used before entering the service, while in the service, or
after discharge. More than $1 billion a year is given to qualified
students, either as payment for training or as a award for service.
If either one or both of your parents have served in the military,
you may be eligible for financial aid.
With few exceptions, federal aid programs
exist exclusively for students with need. 'The big exceptions
are the military programs and veteran benefits, which are
funded without reference to need. Rich or poor, male or female,
a student who qualifies for a program has a chance of tapping
into this huge source of dollars.
Getting money for tuition, however, is going
to be more work than just a quick salute. The armed forces
have their own goals, which are to train career officers and
specialists to serve in their particular branch.
