| All
five U.S. service academies offer scholarships at essentially
no cost to the student. These academies are the U.S. Air Force
Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy,
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The academies are extremely competitive and
have stringent requirements for acceptance. Students must
meet strict health and physical requirements. Academic records
and test scores must exceed those of other applicants; you
must be between the ages of 17 and 21, never married, a U.S.
citizen, and you must have a clean record. Extracurricular
activities and leadership qualities are also considered. In
addition, an applicant must be nominated by an elected official,
i.e., a U.S. Congressman or Senator (the Coast Guard is the
one exception). However, once a student is accepted, they
can expect to receive free tuition and fees, free room and
board, books and supplies, and a monthly stipend or salary
for miscellaneous expenses. In other words, a free college
education.
