The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
offers two-, three-, four- five-year scholarship programs
and a regular four-year program. The Air Force, Army, Navy,
and Marines all offer ROTC programs. These programs are available
for men and woman between the ages of 17 and 25 and, like
the academies, have strict physical and academic requirements.
The competition is fairly stiff, but students have the choice
of more than 600 university and college campuses from which
to chose.
The ROTC scholarship programs cover tuition,
books, and fees, as well as a $100 tax-free monthly allowance.
(The Army pays up to $7,000 or 80 percent, whichever is higher,
annually, for its four-year scholarship.) Payment for room,
board, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses depends
on the ROTC scholarship policies at individual schools. The
ROTC regular four-year program pays a tax-free subsistence
allowance of $100 a month following a student's freshman and
sophomore years in the program.
While attending college, students must enlist
in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. They are also required to
accept an officer commission upon graduation and enlist for
up to eight years (depending on the branch of service) in
the reserves (including active duty) immediately after graduation.

The ROTC also offers a limited number of
