Entertainment

Free movies and concerts are some of the most enjoyable events offered nearly everywhere, often on a weekly or monthly basis at the same location. Senior centers, libraries, museums, and public auditoriums make use of their empty spaces and community rooms during the day by running classic movies, educational movies, or special movie series.

There are also free daytime concerts given by musical groups who volunteer their talents in the community (For example, summer concert series and holiday musical performances in shopping centers and malls.) Parks and recreation departments also sponsor free events (often aimed at retirees and those who are free from daily jobs and family obligations) such as dances and concerts given by local school bands, dance, and music departments.

Many of the performers themselves are retired professionals or working professionals who still perform regularly at “paying” events. These concerts give those who can’t afford the steep price of tickets a chance to experience quality musical events.

Festivals, expos, state and country fairs, circuses, and special interest shows also offer substantial discounts for seniors. Auto shows, house and garden shows, antique shows, holiday fairs, ski shows, recreational vehicle shows, boat shows, travel shows, arts and crafts shows gift shows, and even air shows often have senior discounts on admission prices.

Tourist Attractions

Most tourist attractions around the country give special rates to senior visitors. Members of local or regional senior citizen organizations and clubs may also be entitled to special savings off entrance fees. Many attractions advertise special "limited time only" discounts for seniors at certain times of the year. These special promotions are often lower than the regular senior discounts.

Most major television networks invite viewers to see their favorite shows. To receive tickets, go to: TV Tickets.com

or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

CBS Tickets

Amusement and Theme Parks

People of all ages are fascinated by amusement and theme parks. For most of us, one visit is never enough. We love going with our children, our grandchildren, our friends and, of course, out of town guests. Most amusement parks offer senior citizen discounts. Of particular note is the Disney Magic Years Club, which entitles those over 60 to year-round reduced prices at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. They are also good for discounts on parking, meals, shops, some Hilton hotels and National Car Rental locations. Members also receive a quarterly newsletter and vacation packages at Walt Disney World, Disneyland and other locations.

Races

The races (dog and horse) are another exciting pastime that is popular among mature adults. Race courses around the country offer senior discounts, free "senior" days, "senior matinees" and "half-price" senior discounts.

Cultural Institutions

From art, science and industry, natural history, and sports museums to zoos, botanical gardens, planetariums, and historical landmarks, seniors will find a wide array of educational and cultural attractions that offer senior discounts throughout the year. They are found in every city in the country, rural areas, and out-of-the-way places.

Besides the fact that many government run Institutions and establishments admit seniors for free (including rides, special exhibits, transportation and events inside the attractions) these places offer interesting and stimulating insights into how this country was founded and built. Check with individual organizations for pertinent information including days and hours, senior discounts, "free" days, wheelchair access, current exhibits and special programs, membership information and services, guided tours, etc. Remember, always ask for your discount and present your identification before paying admission.

The performing arts are also popular activities where seniors get a break. From theater, symphony, and ballet to circuses and acrobatic troupes, seniors can enjoy many days and nights of first-class, first-run professional performances at special discounted rates from 25 to 50 percent of regular priced tickets. In the past several years, ticket prices have risen markedly, reaching $70 to $125 for single tickets. Most senior discounts offer significant savings that are sometimes greater at matinees and less popular performances.
